- Use different poetry books to introduce your poetry unit. Books I pulled to use are: You Come Too by Robert Frost, I'm Glad I'm Me by Jack Prelutsky, If I Ran the School by Bruce Lansky, and Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein.
- Give students a folder to create a poem writing booklet. This booklet will help them with poetry writing. I am going to use the following idea to give them as well as copies from the poetry writing books we are using over the next few days. I will give them today and then as I introduce new poetry types this week I will give them a sample to add to their folder. I will also have them place some blank paper in the folder as well as publishing paper to write their final copies.
- After reading a few different poems show students the book Read a Rhyme Write a Rhyme by Jack Prelutsky. This book has poems that all have the same theme on one page. It also includes a poem start to get the students started on a poem. First read the poems he has written about Dogs on pages 4-5. Then use the document camera and display the poemstart on page 5 about dogs.
- Write a class poem about dogs.
Day 2
- Review poem start from yesterday.
- Read our class poem.
- Have students work with a partner to create a poem using one of the poem starts in the Jack Prelutsky book.
- They will take their poem to final copy stage. Display poems.
Day 3
- Use the book Writing Funny Bone Poems to create a poem called Can You Imagine?
- Read the poem example from the book.
- Start a class poem on the document camera. Write the first line together and then divide students into groups. Have each group come up with a line for the poem. Come back together as a group and add them to your class poem. Print out to display with the other poetry.
Day 4 -
- The Writing Funny Bone Poems book also has a good idea for a poem that is called I'd Rather be.
- Use the same steps as yesterday to create a class poem together.
Day 5
- Students choose one of the poems from this week and write/publish a poem for our poetry wall.
